Southwest Harbor Week to Offer Arts Workshops

ArtWaves MDI’s centrally located campus serves as a core of learning, engagement and community for individuals at every skill level to experience and create art.

ArtWaves is offering themed make-and-take craft experiences – how often do you color with stained glass? Make a mosaic for your wall or window and then do a mono-print with gelatin or clay. It is quite a unique way to respond to the island landscape.

ArtWaves new campus has 3 visual arts studios plus a state of the art dance studio with a variety offerings from yoga, to dance, to meditation for you to enjoy, the full picture is online and in person at 1345 State Highway 102 next to Town Hill Market.

No experience is needed – we guide you step by step to make a memorable piece and some good memories in our Kaleidoscope studio.

9:30-12 Rocking Mosaics

Learn to cut, grind, and color with Stained Glass. We have a huge selection of glass, tile and stones with all the tools and materials for you to bring home a framed piece for your window, wall or even make a pair of Acadia inspired of coasters! We have designs, use your own image, or go totally abstract. ages 6 and up can create with glass.

1-3:30pm Geological Printmaking

Prismatic rocks come out beautifully using the reduction method of squeegeeing portions of ink away. Create cairns, the shoreline, or one of our erratic. It looks even better with some native botanicals, which we happen to have. Gelatin plates hold amazing details and you can experiment on a variety of papers using our non toxic Akua inks. Assemble your prints into a folded star book, a matt to frame and cards to send.

6-8:30 pm Fiber

Make and take your own unique Bates Cairns trailmarkers from Maine organic farmers fleece.We supply it all to create a framed scene as well as wet felt the rocks for a cairn. Ages 7 up, the needles are sharp.

$35 for each – register

The programs are part of Southwest Harbor Week, ten days of events hosted by AcadiaChamber, the Chamber of Commerce for Southwest Harbor and Tremont. The Southwest Harbor & Tremont Chamber of Commerce works to promote a vibrant economic community by attracting visitors and connecting them to local businesses. It hosts annual events such as the Fourth of July Fireworks and Acadia’s Oktoberfest. It runs a Visitor Center in Southwest Harbor and the website, valuable resources for both visitors and residents of Mount Desert Island. The Chamber also seeks to enhance the experience of visitors by publishing trail, cycling, and road maps of the island and supporting self-guided audio tours.
