Robert Wellings will exhibit at the Gallery at Somes Sound

“Dawn Light,” by Robert Wellings.

Robert Wellings will exhibit his paintings at the Gallery at Somes Sound throughout October.

Wellings’ inspiration for this collection of work is the ability of the Maine landscape to evoke in the viewer a sense of solitude and mystery. Scenes of dusk-lit meadows, silhouettes of rocky shores, bare trees in the pre-dawn hours and other moments of contemplative witness are painted from memory, imagination and plein-air sketches. Through these works of various

times and places in the Maine landscape, Wellings hopes viewers will reconnect with their own deep experiences of belonging, wonder and gratitude.

Five percent of sales from Wellings’ show will be donated to the Wendell Gilley Museum because the Gallery at Somes Sound supports their mission of bringing people closer to nature through the arts.

The Gallery at Somes Sound is at 1112 Main St., Mount Desert. Email www.galleryatsomessound.com, or call 207-610-4622 for more information.

William B. Hoyt paintings are at The Gallery at Somes Sound

“Beauty and the Boys.”

Paintings by William B. Hoyt recently arrived at The Gallery at Somes Sound.

Hoyt was born in 1945 and grew up on the campus of St. George’s School in Middletown, Rhode Island. Hoyt was raised by his mother, Kitty, a well-regarded portrait painter, and father, Norris, who was a renowned sailor, writer and photographer.  Hoyt spent much of my childhood sailing and painting. In 1963 Hoyt graduated from St. George’s School and then from Yale in 1967 with a major in fine art. In 1968, he was commissioned at the United States Navy Officer Candidate School. Hoyt served on the staff of COMSIXTHFLEET, where he was recognized for his artistic abilities. Consequently, he was detailed to paint portraits of admirals and create a portfolio of paintings of fleet activities for the Naval Art Collection. In 1970, Hoyt returned to civilian life and settled in Vermont. His subjects have included marine, landscape and intimate domestic still lifes.

“They share my interests in the effects of light at a particular moment. The threads of the canvas, the sea, Vermont, Maine, my family and friends have woven themselves inextricably into my psyche and my work,” he says.

Hoyt has painted professionally for the past 50 years and is included in many private and corporate collections including Steven and Dayna Bochco, John and Gwen McCaw, Senator Claiborne and Nuala Pell, Laurence and Mary Rockefeller, Charles and Anne Sincerbeaux, Beth Webster, Bank of America, and many others.

Eline Barclay’s paintings featured at The Gallery at Somes Sound

Eline Barclay, “Towards Dawn.”

The Gallery at Somes Sound will feature work by Eline Barclay with an opening reception from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 2.

On the downeast coast of Maine, in Eline Barclay’s studio overlooking the pleasant river marsh, she has found the perfect synthesis of solitude and inspiration. Wetlands, tidal and freshwater, have always comprised a major part of her iconography. Barclay’s paintings are moody and atmospheric and grounded in the tradition of tonalism. They reflect a deep absorption in nature. Barclay’s response to this landscape is inner peacefulness and yet also a mood of elegy reflecting a deep concern for a threatened ecosystem.

Five percent of sales from Barclay’s show will be donated to the Land & Garden Preserve.

View her work online at https://www.galleryatsomessound.com/all-artists/profile/eline-barclay.

For your comfort and safety, a maximum of 12 people will be at this event. Make a reservation at https://www.galleryatsomessound.com/events/post/eline-barclay.

One of the sure signs of spring is the Mount Desert Open, a showcase for all artists living on MDI. Shaw Gallery in Northeast Harbor will be hosting the seventeenth annual community art exposition. We invite you to participate. This is a painting, craft and sculpture exposition for local residents to show their work in a gallery setting. There are only two criteria to gain acceptance in this year’s exhibit. First, you must have work that is recent and you are proud of. Second, you must have a connection to MDI, such as live, work or address. All interested persons are encouraged to contact the gallery. There is no jury, all are included.

Each year brings new artists, as well as many that are veterans. We typically have around 50 artists. It was a wide-ranging show from exploratory to realistic, from watercolor to weaving. Many people are aware of many individual talents on MDI, but what makes this show a community is to see it all together in one space. Exhibitors included professional artists, students, and aspiring, starry- eyed amateurs. We always have more who want to participate than we have room for. It is a first come first served process. The space always fills fast.

The show will have a festive opening reception on Thursday May 24th, 2018 and run through Monday June 11th. Please contact Shaw Gallery at 276-5000, or at info@shawjewelry.com for information.
